Winter Weather and Your Power Chair

Chill is in the air. Christmas music is playing on the radio and your breath is visible. Its winter time and your main concern might be just to stay warm. Well bundle up and read on, because if you have a power chair and it’s freezing outside, there are some important things to know.

Keep your chair inside
So you know not to keep your chair in any kind of weather other than sunny and seventy-five. However, time and time and again we receive calls where individuals have electronic issues with their batteries and/or joystick. A lot of these calls come in the winter months. Coincidence? I’m afraid not. Cold weather, especially under thirty-two degrees, can cause electronic issues with your chair. Before you panic, your power chair is fine with short term exposure to cold weather; you just don’t want to store your chair outside in the winter months.

Check the weather
While strenuous outside use is never recommended for your power chair, it’s perfectly okay for light outdoor use on even, smooth surfaces. That being said, even and smooth surfaces can be dangerous in the winter months. So check the weather channel before you head outside with your power chair in the winter months. Any moisture on sidewalks and roads will be icy in below freezing temperatures so pay attention to the weather report and plan your trips accordingly.

Have a backup plan
If you have to go out in questionable weather make sure to have a backup plan if things get slick. A good idea is to have a relative or friend who can pick you up if the weather turns severe. As mentioned previously, it’s best to stay in if the weather is questionable, but realistically you’ll have errands and appointments to get to in the winter months so just make sure to commit to extra planning to compensate.

Charge your chair
Some individuals don’t use their power chairs as much in the winter months. If this is you, then just make sure to charge your chair at least a few times a week. This may sound strange, since you’re not using the chair as much, but if you don’t charge your chair at least a few times a week you could find yourself with a dead battery when spring rolls around. If you plan on storing your power chair for the winter, be sure to store it in a dry, temperature controlled room.

If your power chair is having issues you can contact a mobility representative at 888-345-1780 or simply fill out our contact form and we will get the issues resolved. Make sure you’re not storing your chair in cold temperatures during the winter months (yes, I’m talking to you Michiganians), always check the weather and have a plan, and another plan, and a backup plan for your last plan and, well you get the idea.

Power Wheelchair Repairs

Anytime an item such as a car, lawn motor, or computer needs repairs it normally is an inconvenience and frustrating experience for the owner of the equipment. If you’ve experienced repair needs for your power wheelchair you understand how frustrating the repairs process can be. Having to deal with the hassle of getting repairs on any device let alone your power wheelchair is not a “fun” process for anyone involved. Here at Aeroflow, we try to make the repair experience as pleasant and as smooth as possible.

How long do power wheelchair repairs take?

As you might imagine, some power wheelchair repairs can take longer than others. Depending on the issue the repair tech may have to order parts for your device and then we have to wait for the parts to come in to replace them on your chair. Sometimes our Mobility Representatives are able to resolve the problem by giving you instructions over the phone on how to fix the issue. With that being said a tech from Aeroflow will call you within 48 hours of your repair inquiry or question.

My power wheelchair requires extensive repair. Now what?

If our Mobility Representatives are unable to help, we take a detailed account of the issue and relay that information to our Repairs Department. Should it be something that you are not able to correct with assistance from the Repairs Department, such as an electrical failure, we will need to send someone out to evaluate the wheelchair. We contract with repair providers across the country so that we can get to you as soon as possible. A well trained technician will come to your house to diagnose and hopefully fix the malfunction. There are some issues that require we take the power wheelchair back to the warehouse to perform extensive repairs. In these cases a loaner chair may be provided, depending on your insurance and the age of your chair. Other times the issue may be with the manufacture themselves. We work directly with Pride and Drive, there are times that the issue you are having is under warranty. For example if you had a problem with the frame or drivetrain of your power wheelchair depending on how old your chair is Pride or Drive would be responsible for the replacement. You can visit the sites above to see exactly what is under warranty for each device you have. This information is also in the handbook that comes with your new chair upon delivery. We know that without your power wheelchair you are extremely limited in your mobility. It is important to us that you get back to your normal routine; it is equally important that we get the job done right. Research and skill goes into the repair process. Be patient with us as this can sometimes be a lengthy process.

Most Common Repair: Batteries

If you received your PWC less than a year to today’s date, please be aware that you are not due for batteries until your PWC is at least a year old. With that being said there are some insurance companies that will pay for the batteries after 6 months. Please contact us and we will get an order from your doctor and then we will sent a request to your insurance to have them pay for a set of new batteries for you. If your insurance provider will not cover the cost of new batteries than you may be able to purchase the batteries out of pocket. Contact our E-Commerce Representative for assistance.

How do I get in touch with you?

If you have any questions or concerns about power wheelchair repairs give us a call at 888-345-1780. We are ready and willing to assist you through the process. We can also help you or a loved one qualify for a power wheelchair through insurance. Simply fill out our contact form and we will take care of the rest. We look forward to hearing from you!

Make the most of your doctor’s appointment

Insurance payers, especially Medicare, have a long list of specific needs that must be fulfilled in order to provide a patient with a power wheelchair or scooter through insurance. These needs include a face-to-face meeting with your doctor, specific chart notes, and an assortment of medical paperwork that must be filled out. While this process can seem daunting and overwhelming, Aeroflow Healthcare is here to walk you through the process and help ensure that you get the mobility equipment you need.

In order to make the most of your doctor’s appointment and expedite the process, fill out our Qualify Through Insurance form to get started and talk to Aeroflow Healthcare before your appointment so we can help to inform your doctor of what your meeting will be about and what will be required.

How you can help your doctor

One of the first steps along this process is to meet with your doctor and have a face-to-face meeting, or an evaluation. This evaluation will help your doctor write your prescription and fill out the crucial notes that your insurance requires. Make sure you bring the subject of your mobility needs to your doctor, they are seeing many patients throughout the day, and may not think of it themselves at that moment. Make sure you describe in detail why you need a power wheelchair in your home, and explain why you cannot use other mobility assistive devices such as a walker, cane, or manual wheelchair. Your doctor will need to make specific notes regarding this conversation. Leave nothing out and make sure to give honest statements.

Make sure your doctor is ready

Over the past few years, the process and requirements to get a power wheelchair have become much stricter and more difficult. Make sure your doctor is aware of these changes and ready to help you throughout the process, difficult paperwork and all. Aeroflow Healthcare is ready and happy to work with your doctor to help ensure that all of their notes are accurate and to the extent that your insurance payer requires.

Objective measurements

One of the main things your mobility evaluation will consist of is your doctor taking strength measurements, range of motion measurements, and other similar tests to support why you can’t use other equipment besides the power chair. This is extremely important and must be included in the office notes from your appointment. So, if your doctor does not measure your strength then request that they do so. If they have questions about this then refer them to the office notes guidelines that Aeroflow has faxed ahead of your appointment or have them call Aeroflow Healthcare.

Make sure your doctor has the paperwork

Your supplier is going to fax your doctor all the paperwork they need to complete to help you get your power chair covered by your insurance company. Before your appointment, it could be helpful to call your doctor’s office and confirm that they have the necessary paperwork. Also, Aeroflow Healthcare can supply you with a copy of the paperwork as well. That way, both you and your doctor can walk through the requirements together and ensure that all proper documentation is noted.

While it is ultimately up to your doctor, your insurance, and Aeroflow Healthcare to provide you with your power wheelchair or scooter through insurance, you can help the process immensely by properly informing yourself of the process and helping your doctor.

If you have any additional questions about this process or want to discuss your mobility needs, please call Aeroflow Healthcare at 844-686-5539 and speak to a representative.

Getting a Power Wheelchair Without Insurance

Many patients call Aeroflow Healthcare in need of a power mobility device; unfortunately not everyone qualifies for an assistive device through their specific insurance guidelines. In order for insurance to pay for a power device, many providers want to know why other devices have failed to aid you with your mobility issues.

Insurance Process

First, insurance will require that you set up a face-to-face mobility assessment with your healthcare provider.  During this assessment your physician will state objectively why a cane, walker, and manual wheelchair have failed to assist you with your current activities of daily living within the home.

You can visit the Medicare website to see the official items that insurance will pay for as well as the guidelines for each item. Many individuals do not ultimately qualify for a power device for use inside the home. Most patients are able to get from room to room in their home, however doing other activities that require a greater distance of walking such as shopping at the grocery store or at the local mall is not possible for them to accomplish.

If you need a device for long distances or for outside use, don’t worry; you’re not out of luck!
